Surviving and Thriving the Back-to-School Hustle
Back-to-School Planning
Exciting. Hectic. Whirlwind. These are just a few words I use to describe the back-to-school rush. Even though I know it’s lurking at the end of each summer, every year it seems to creep up earlier and earlier. But I’m ready to jump in with both feet and get stuff done! Plus, I’m going to share simple tips that will not just help you survive but thrive during this busy season.
Tip 1: Get Organized Early
The reality is the next school year’s registration forms, school fees, and picking classes were
already in progress before you even switched from sneakers to flip flops at the end of the current school year! So, start planning your supplies, schedules, and meals to fall in line with your school goals.
- Shop early for school supply deals to get what you want and need without breaking the bank.
- Fill out your planner, fridge calendar, or even apps on your phone to make sure you are prepared and can avoid last-minute stress.
- Create a lunch or dinner menu for school days. Not only will your family know the schedule, but you can grocery shop on your budget.
Tip 2: Establish a Routine
One of the best things about summer break is being allowed to stay up late and sleep in. But those days don’t last forever. And the body needs some help getting back into rising early for the school day schedules.
- Talk with your family about setting consistent wake-up and bedtime routines for smoother mornings.
- Put those routines into motion. You can start out slowly like a few weeks before school officially starts so everyone can get used to it.
- You can still enjoy the fun days of summer while balancing getting back into a schedule.

Tip 3: Prioritize Self-Care
This is a busy time; however, try to carve out moments for you to rest, get some exercise and mentally chill so you don’t get overwhelmed and expend all your energy.
- Take advantage of those earlier bedtimes.
- A quick walk can help clear your head from all your prep work.
- Ask for help when you need it.
Tip 4: Involve the Whole Family
Speaking of asking for help, you don’t need to do all this alone. The kids are going back to school and parents are switching up the daily agenda, so preparing for back-to-school is a family event. Everyone can help!
- Share the chores or school prep tasks by delegating them to your kids, partner, or other family and friends.
- Have your family check-in and report on their tasks to stay connected.
- Encourage supporting each other through this work because with a smooth schedule, the whole household will benefit.
Find Your Flow
No matter if this is your first back-to-school season or you’re a professional, these tips could help you and your family survive, and possibly thrive, during the hustle. With good planning and teamwork, you’ll be prepared to start off the new school year right!
